Not every light colored wood is as soft as pine. Not every dark wood is as hard as ebony. It is a common misconception that darker woods are harder and thus, more desirable than lighter colored woods. It reminds me of the s when every den had to have dark or walnut colored paneled walls, furniture, and accessories. This may be the very reason that these dens were later called man-caves, because they were almost always dark. Guys would stain pine to a walnut color to darken it, and make it seem more valuable, as the most valued North American hardwood is American Black Walnut. But I’m sure the practice goes back much further, as even in historic pieces, they were ebonized to make the wood seem richer and more valuable. There is often a persistent belief that the darker woods are harder, and more durable as well as more masculine and bold in visual punch.

Dagger with Zoomorphic Hilt, ca. Beginning with the 17th century, another form of dagger—the plug bayonet and later the socket bayonet —was used to convert muskets and other longarms into spears by mounting them on the barrel. They were periodically used for eating; the arm was also used for a variety of other tasks such as mending boots, house repairs and farm jobs. The final function of the dagger was as an obvious and ostentatious means of enhancing a man’s personal apparel, conforming to fashion which dictated that all men carried them.
Combat knife 20th century daggers WW1 trench warfare caused daggers and fighting knives to come back in play.
The same dating system was used during the s. The differences are the “lightning” form of the letter S in Case and USA and the fact that the dots were put above the USA. From to mid, the actual date was stamped on the tang.

The notion that business should be accountable to the society in which it operates is not new. There is a growing international trend towards mandatory regulation and an increasing number of codes of conduct and voluntary standards for business to report on their social and environmental impacts. International standards have been created as a response to the market requiring a common standard framework to facilitate trade and technology transfer. The International Organization for Standardization is a network make up of standards institutes worldwide.
As social responsibility SR has become increasingly important to the corporate world, and although a variety of guidelines related to SR already exist such as AA and the OECD guidelines , there was a need to establish a framework that could be used by organisations worldwide. Unlike most International Standards which implement a management system, the ISO is intended to assist organisations in contributing to sustainable development, by providing guidance on SR.

The name “KA-BAR” came to be after the company received a poorly written English letter in which the author wrote how the company’s knife saved his life after he was attacked by a bear and his gun failed to kill it. New designs were sought from hunting gear catalogs. Marines bought many different knives and designs from a large number of knife suppliers.
After extensive trials under field conditions, the KA-BAR fighting knife was found to be the most popular among troops because it was adequate for most tasks demanded by a combat soldier. The Marine Corps made several changes to the original design, these included the introduction of a small fuller to make a slightly longer but lighter blade for combat, a pinned pommel and a stacked leather handle for better grip. The blade, guard, and pommel were all finished in a non-reflective matte phosphate finish instead of the brightly polished steel of the original design.

Posted 08 May – Note how wide and deep the fullers are, on all these pictured knives. It appears to me that they were cut with the tooling run at a right angle to the blade, instead of inline with it; which is more commonly seen. These blades are forged and Marbles pioneered the fuller in the US The name “blood groove” is a myth and these had nothing to do with suction during stabbing as a way to make a lighter stronger blade. It also seems to help when sharpening.
This tidbit from http: The first C2 was created in the style of a commercial hunting knife that was produced by the Union Cutlery Company. The Marbles knife had fullers that were quite wide and deep and were positioned lower on the blade. This ingenious design allowed the Marbles knife to be successfully flat-sharpened by holding the blade flat on a flat stone while in the field.

This list may not be the most definitive breakdown of pocket folding knives on the market, but it is a collection of our favorite options available on the market today. And for that they have earned both our undying respect and a spot on this list. BUY The idea of the multitool is an old one, but it always involved attaching gimmicks to a knife, which resulted in a poor blade and a mediocre collection of tools. Tim Leatherman reversed this 25 years ago, using folding pliers as his platform and installing tools in the handle, creating something new and terrific. There are all kinds of Leathermans, but my favorite is the Wave. I keep one in my range bag and wear another on my belt. It’s hard to list the jobs it can’t do, and the knife does a dandy job of gutting a deer.

Why is the Star of David on the sword of the Marines? Anyone with a historical note on this. This is what I found: The above reference comes from JewishMarines. If the sword is made by the Wilkinson Sword Company the Star of David is on the hilt because the company was founded by a Jew, and the swords made by the direct descendants all have the Star of David on the hilt. Are either of the above known to be true or are they urban legends?? I have no source documentation to compare this with. Not even the “Old Guard” has that privilege.
