Prehistoric times[ edit ] Numerous gravel pits have been dug in the Southampton area, many of which have yielded Stone Age tools. Richard Warner investigated those claims and found a ditch, a bank and some Roman coins. The settlement was known as Hamwic and or Hamtun, the two names co-existed and described the same area but were used in different contexts. Mary’s Church also appear in 11th century documents. In one case, one of three occupants in a white van seen in Mill Lane called at two houses. In one incident the caller virtually demanded to clean the driveway, using the fact that he had done the next door neighbour’s driveway to gain authenticity. Another white van ex British Gas vehicle was picked up by residents in The limes with the occupants acting suspiciously. As in the other incidents, the callers got short shrift. However, in another incident in London Road involving the same vehicle, there were only young people in the house at the time the call was made, and the caller banged on the door and windows in an intimidating manner.
Thankfully the young people did not open the door. If you are intending to leave your young folk in the house whilst popping out, please instil in them the need to be vigilant when anybody approaches the property. Roundell had bought the plot of land in from Lord Selbourne and it included 67 acres and Osborne Farm, later to be called Home Farm. For the first few years, Roundell’s home was known as Oeborne; only later did it become known as Verdley Place. Some claim that this is the location where the last wild bear in England was killed; its ghost apparently haunts the site. A watercolour view of the ruins of Verdley Castle taken from the west, drawn in by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm image courtesy of the British Library, reproduced with permission “Inside of Verdley Castle, Sussex” copper engraved print Antiquities of England and Wales, THIS ruin stands in the north west corner of the county, in the hundred of Eastburne, and about three miles north of the village of that name.
VULGAR tradition reports it to have been a castle, demolished in one of the danish invasions; but it situation does not seem to give much sanction to that opinion, as it stands in a deeply woody bottom, commanded at a very small distance all round, and so covered as not to be visible till one is close upon it; indeed it is scarcely known in the neighbourhood that such a building exists.
Another tradition makes it to have been a mad-house belonging to the nunnery of Eastburne; but unless that house, which consisted of only five or six nuns, had much more than their proportionable share of lunatics, this supposition cannot be likely; indeed it is not here mentioned as probable, but solely to show how little is at present known about it.
The building seems to have been rather too big and solid for an hermitage, for which its solitary and gloomy situation is admirably well calculated. WHAT it really was, appears impossible to ascertain; as, after a most diligent search in every book where an account of it might be expected, not even the slightest information could be obtained.
FROM a careful investigation of the ruin, it may be discovered that it was a quadrangular building, nearly twice as long as broad, measuring on the outside thirty-three feet four inches, by 68 feet. The parts standing, are the westernmost end, with small returns on the north and south sides; the first containing eight feet two inches, and the second eleven feet six; the thickness of the walls about five feet four inches.
These and the other particulars are more clearly pointed out by the annexed plan. Near the door are some slight traces of a narrow winding staircase. THIS view was drawn anno

In the days before the Internet, many single people who wanted to find a relationship might have posted a personal ad in a local newspaper or perhaps gave telephone dating a whirl. While these types of dating were great for their time, they have mostly been replaced with Internet dating, which works in a similar way but is much more effective and easier to do. When using an online dating service, instead of sending a personal ad in the post to a newspaper, you would simply type a short profile about yourself into a dating website such as ours, for other members to find and read.
You can also easily upload a photo of yourself to add to your profile too. Once you are happy with your profile, you can use simple search tools to view profiles of members who live near you for you to get in touch with. Why not sign up now and give it a whirl?
Early career[ edit ] Southerton began his cricketing life during the s as a batsman, but apart from a few good scores in , when he at times opened the batting and averaged 22 which in an era pre-dating the heavy roller was exceeded by only two players with more innings, he did little for Sussex in this role and played in none of the major first-class games in the following two seasons.
In , Southerton was engaged at Southampton and resided at the Antelope Ground until It was not until that Southerton developed the slow bowling for which he was to gain belated fame and set many records. Southerton had much more than spin and flight, however. He was able to vary his pace and pitch very well, often deceiving batsmen by bowling a ball outside the off stump which turned on the under-prepared pitches of his time viciously into the right-handed batsmen.
Southerton typically would then bowl a faster, straighter ball as a contrast, and was exceptionally strong at knowing what ball would be most difficult for each individual batsman. He had hardly bowled at all up to , but in August with six for 50 against Middlesex and seven for 45 aided by six dismissals from wicket-keeper George Ubsdell against the team for whom he was later to carry out most of his major bowling feats, Southerton established himself as a permanent fixture in top-class cricket at the age of thirty-eight.

Flag of the County of Surrey, registered Banner of arms of Surrey County Council The flag of Surrey is the blue and gold chequered flag of the traditional county of Surrey and is derived from the coat of arms of William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey heraldic blazon: Chequy Or and Azur. The Surrey flag was officially registered as a “traditional design” by the Flag Institute on 11 September following research by Philip Tibbetts on behalf of the Association of British Counties , which showed that the county was linked to an emblem of antiquity.
Prior to this date, the county had no official flag but the banner of the coat of arms of Surrey County Council was frequently used instead. The Surrey flag is a representation of the arms originally used as a personal heraldic device by William de Warenne, first Earl of Surrey , in and has since enjoyed a long association with the county itself, as attested in a 17th-century poem about the Battle of Agincourt. The de Warenne family became extinct in the male line in but, importantly, there is evidence the design continued to be used by the men of the county, as found in a poem about the Battle of Agincourt in by Michael Drayton written in which records the men of Surrey carrying a banner of gold and blue checks into battle in honour of their late earl, “The men of Surrey, Checky Blew and gold, Which for brave Warren their first Earle they wore”.
