Helping each other enjoy life and relationships on the spectrum. Saturday, May 26, The Hidden Autistics – Asperger’s in Adults Recently I encountered a problem while collaborating with a group therapist with whom I share a patient. My patient has progressed quickly in therapy, as do many adults on the spectrum. However he did not start off as stereotypically autistic.

In fact, initially he presented as many of my patients do: Typical posture, gait and gesturing. It took a few sessions to realize this fine gentleman suffered mightly with the symtoms of Asperger Syndrome, which he kept well managed and thoroughly hidden. Contrary to the stereotyoes of adults on the spectrum, my patient displayed no “meltdown” behavior, was keenly TOO keenly aware of people’s reactions to him and exhibited no bizarre special interests or encyclopedic knowledge of vaccuum models.

In fact, “Joe”, as we’ll call him, socialized quite well. He seemed quietly confident and wry, intelligent and perceptive. People responded well to him, really liked him, though probably none of them would describe him as a close friend. No one realized – in fact he often went without realizing – that his baseline anxiety approached panic on a regular basis.

As soon as he was out of bed, existential angst was his constant companion.

Behavioral and preliminary neuroimaging findings suggest autism manifests differently in girls. Notably, females with autism may be closer to typically developing males in their social abilities than typical girls or boys with autism. Girls with autism may be harder to diagnose for several reasons, including criteria developed specifically around males and overlapping diagnoses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder or anorexia.

When Frances was an infant, she was late to babble, walk and talk. She was three before she would respond to her own name. Although there were hints that something was unusual about her development, the last thing her parents suspected was autism. But even he did not recognize the condition in his daughter, who was finally diagnosed at about five years of age. Today Frances is a slender, lightly freckled year-old with her dad’s warm brown eyes.

Like many girls her age, she is shy but also has strong opinions about what she does and does not want. Their mom, Page, can recall how different the diagnostic process was for her two children.

As it turned out, he was absolutely a gigolo. His promise was broken. When he made that promise, I was flummoxed. Why would he think I might consider him a gigolo, of all things? What I should have asked myself was, why does he have gigolos on his mind?

Life with Aspergers Unlike classical autism which is usually detected by age three, Aspergers is often missed in early childhood. The reason for the missed diagnosis is the fact that many children with Aspergers meet most early childhood developmental milestones, although some are late bloomers, and often have a large vocabulary. In some cases of mild Aspergers, the first noticeable signs of the disorder may be apparent when the child enters school and has significant difficultly with social interaction, communication or understanding verbal instruction.

Social Awkwardness, Aspergers or Something Else? It is important to note that many children and adults who do not have any medical condition are simply shy or have difficulty conversing and relating with peers. There are also people with other medical conditions such as nonverbal learning disorder NLD and attention deficit hyperactivity ADHD disorder who exhibit communication problems similar to Aspergers symptoms.

Much has been said about the tendency of Trump supporters to have more authoritarian personalities than the norm, and that is true, but why is authoritarianism so attractive to them? Why do they hate democracy? In fact, they love the idea of Trump having as much power as he desires which is unlimited as his need for power and adulation is insatiable , so he can push through his cruel and destructive agenda.

People with Aspergers have feelings like everyone else and smile when they are happy and, as far as I know, so do all people in the autistic spectrum. They all have feelings and can feel happy and can smile in those moments.

November 30, I feel like the feedback on this one won’t be amazing, but here goes. I can’t stand the majority of Reddit comment chains. Look on AskReddit or almost any thread that involves some sort of pop culture reference or story. Whether it’s videogames, movies, TV, pretty much any of these. What you’ll see is an inciteful comment. The original answer to the question that possibly involves some sort of movie quote or reference.

That’s cool that they implemented something a lot of people like into their response, but soon to follow is an absolute shitshow. The next few comments are all quotes from this movie. They think quoting it is some sort of inside joke to them even though there is a reason the original comment got 14k upvotes and a gild and it just isn’t.

Comment after comment is movie quotes from that movie but it’s just stupid. It gets to the point where the thread is almost literally beating a dead horse, like, close to the equivalent. The string of comments, as the upvotes become more and more barren while scrolling down the thread, it gives me more and more annoyance and boredom of how they think they’re being witty and slick, but simply aren’t.

Plus, I’m sure the reason they do it most of the time is so they can get a tiny piece of that karma cake, so it doesn’t even feel meaningful but more or less a quick scheme for internet points.
