Mecca clock vs Big Ben 11 Aug The problem has been blamed on decades of building work that have gone on around the foot of the structure – ft 96m tall, with 11 storeys and stairs – since it was completed in These have ranged from a sewer built in the s to the District Line the following decade and an underground car park for MPs in the s. When the Jubilee Line was extended through Westminster in the late s, special techniques were used to create a concrete barrier under the tower, in a bid to secure it. Yet a new survey for London Underground and the Parliamentary Estates Department has found that the rate of movement has accelerated in recent years. The report, completed in but only just published by the parliamentary authorities, discloses that between November and August – the period when MPs staged heated debates on the invasion of Iraq – a mystery “event” caused the tower to lurch, with the clock face moving up to an eighth of an inch 3. The engineers conclude that no single known factor can fully explain the “event”.

Eagle-eyed train enthusiasts will have spotted the train as it arrived at Carmarthen railway station shortly before 10pm on Thursday night.
It will be used by Great Western Railway on its routes between South Wales and London, and, with speeds of up to mph, is expected to shave 20 minutes off journey time for people travelling from Swansea to Paddington. Following the announcement that electrification will not be rolled out further west than Cardiff, the hybrid trains will rely on their diesel engines as they travel between Carmarthen and the capital. However, electrification is not expected to reach Cardiff for around 18 months or so, meaning more journey time will be spent in diesel mode.
Read More Rail passengers in Wales face three months of disruption due to electrification While not as beneficial for the environment as they would be if the whole line from Paddington to Swansea was fully electrified, the new trains will still be more environmentally friendly than the current HST models.

Volunteers[ edit ] Shomrim volunteers, who are unpaid, are mostly members of the Haredi Jewish communities that they serve; however, around 70 per cent of the victims they help are not from the Orthodox Jewish community, usually just local residents from any race or religion. Generally, members work two to a vehicle that is equipped with a radio and a siren.
They wear identifying jackets and yarmulkes on the job. They have been known to quickly mobilize area residents to block off streets in order to stop suspects. Volunteers patrol the city streets in the wee hours of the morning as a deterrent presence. In a Crown Heights Shomrim volunteer was convicted of assault charges after repeatedly hitting a suspect on the head with a walkie-talkie after the man had been subdued.
He was suspended pending internal investigation, with Shomrim confident that he would be vindicated in court, and was sentenced to three years of probation in Many residents of Hasidic neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Baltimore, and Stamford Hill tend to call Shomrim in an emergency rather than the police. Shomrim cites its faster response time, knowledge of the territory, and ability to speak Yiddish , the language of the Hasidic community, for the residents’ preference.
They don’t tend to waste our time and they don’t let people go”. But Shomrim does not share this information with police due to the Torah prohibition against mesirah informing on a fellow Jew to the non-Jewish authorities. Today the Hackney borough commander commends Shomrim in its role as “evidence-gathers” and support for police activities. Commentators cite the groups’ effectiveness and also their political clout as a voting bloc that follows rabbis’ direction.

Pinterest Canberra is a strange city to date in. Dating for me has now been whittled down to two options: In my sharehouse, Sundays involve lamenting the loss of dignity from the night before, woefully checking bank accounts and sometimes, angsty chat about our misadventures in the world of love. During one such session a few weeks ago, my housemate Declan mentioned he had tried speed dating and I agreed to give it a shot.
Something about speed dating seemed retro to me. Speed and a wide pool of choice? The Sunday night came and I arrived resplendent in a bejewelled wedding gown. I had to let all these men know I was playing for keeps. Fine, I arrived in jeans, with my faithful housemate Tatum in tow. I was two wines in.
The host of the event, James, assured me I would I need it. We need each other for moral support.
Alec Moir, 78, and his wife, Judith, 76, sold it to HS2 in January , because initial plans mean the track would go through part of their land. The property has been standing empty ever since. But the property has stood empty since the sale. Mr Moir, who lived there for 37 years, said: In Leicestershire, the HS2 route was originally planned to go west of the village of Measham, 20 miles north of Leicester.
But that would have wrecked an industrial park which was one of the main employers in the area, so the route was changed last year to go east of Measham.
I went to your speed dating night last September in Soho. I really wanted to try something different as I was bored with the gay scene and online chat.
It will also cover the UK-Amsterdam route when this starts. Passholder places are controlled by a quota but you’ll find plenty of availability if you book in advance and I’m told you should find reasonable availability even on the day of travel. If you have a flexi-type pass, yes, using a Eurostar passholder fare requires you to use one of your unlimited travel days, though of course you can use other trains that day in addition to the Eurostar in the countries for which the pass is valid.
To qualify for these passholder fares your pass needs to cover either the country where your Eurostar journey starts, or the country where it finishes, or both. A very attractive deal! Check-in 45 minutes before your train, not A passholder print-at-home ticket may not operate the Eurostar check-in gates so you must check-in using one of the staffed kiosks so that your railpass can be checked. For this reason, passholders are asked to check in at least 45 minutes before their train, rather than the usual minimum of 30 minutes.
Below are just a few of our New York speed-dating events. We’re sorry, there are currently no upcoming events scheduled. I thought it was a great place:
Dating is a stage of romantic relationships in humans whereby two people meet socially with the aim of each assessing the other’s suitability as a prospective partner in an intimate relationship or is a form of courtship, consisting of social activities done by the couple, either alone or with others. The protocols and practices of dating, and the terms used to describe it, vary.
Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian.
Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date. Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going.
If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart. That is why I advise our boys to read stories and watch movies more and to learn more beautiful phrases to tell girls. The Internet is shaping the way new generations date. Facebook , Skype , Whatsapp , and other applications have made remote connections possible. Online dating tools are an alternate way to meet potential dates.
The average duration of courtship before proceeding to engagement or marriage varies considerably throughout the world.
